To maintain our growth and continue supporting individuals in need of counselling services, we are looking for engaged and compassionate volunteers to govern our organization on our Board of Directors and play a leadership role in the oversight of counselling, developmental and community services. As a member of our Board of Directors, you will be responsible for the Centre’s long-term planning, strategic leadership and governance in accordance with South Island Counselling’s mission, vision and values.  

Our Board of Directors consists of volunteer Directors who each serve a minimum 3-year term. The Board normally meets once a month.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership for SICCT and assure that it maintains its focus on its primary mission and objectives

  • Prepare for, and attend, all Board meetings and participate independently and knowledgeably in all deliberations of the Board. Stays informed about committee matters, prepares themselves well for meetings, and reviews and comments on minutes and reports

  • Participate actively in committees and project work assigned by the Board and the development of policies to guide the organization towards its strategic goals

  • Approve material business decisions

  • Ensure he/she/they are informed of and meeting all legal and fiduciary responsibilities

  • Ensure that performance measures and targets are established that are both realistic and challenging and that they are monitored and delivered

  • Develop collegial working relationships with other Board and committee members that contribute to consensus.

  • Actively participate in the Board and committee's annual evaluation and planning efforts

  • Participate in fundraising and volunteer events for SICCT

  • Represent the agency in a professional and confidential manner while in the community
     

Qualifications and Experiences Needed:

  • Experience in leading organizations or cross-functional teams preferably with some experience in the non-profit sector

  • Demonstrated business acumen, knowledge, and experience in one or more key functional areas such as Fundraising, Communications/Public Relations, Human Resources, Government Relations and Law

  • Board of Directors experience is a plus

  • Able to navigate complex challenges and deal with ambiguity

  • Strong interpersonal skills networking abilities able to create collaborative relationships with government and like-minded organizations

  • Strong creative, strategic, analytical, organizational, and personal skills.

  • Demonstrated change and project management skills and the ability to delegate

  • Able to manage vision and purpose

  • Action-oriented

  • Operates with integrity
     

The time commitment is a three-year term with approximately 10 hours per month for the duration of the term. Most of the support can be done remotely. The hours are flexible, except for monthly Board meetings. Key skills and experience for the role include leadership, strategic planning, and the ability to navigate complex challenges and ambiguity. Legal, fundraising, communications/public relations, government relations and human resources skills are a plus!
