Our background
Anxiety and stress can feel overwhelming, affecting your thoughts, body, and daily life. Counselling offers a supportive space to better understand what you’re experiencing, develop practical tools, and begin feeling more calm, grounded, and in control.
Understanding Anxiety & Stress
How Anxiety & Stress Show Up
Anxiety and stress are natural responses to life’s challenges, but when they become ongoing or overwhelming, they can begin to affect many areas of your life. You might notice racing thoughts, difficulty relaxing, trouble sleeping, or a constant sense of worry or pressure.
While stress is often linked to external demands, anxiety can feel more persistent and harder to switch off. Everyone experiences this differently, and there’s no one “right” way it shows up.
Counselling provides a safe and supportive space to explore what’s contributing to your anxiety and stress, while building strategies that feel manageable and effective.
Through counselling, you can begin to:
• Better understand your thoughts, emotions, and triggers
• Learn tools to manage worry, stress, and overwhelm
• Feel more calm, grounded, and in control
• Improve sleep and daily functioning
• Build confidence in handling challenging situations
Even small shifts can begin to make a meaningful difference over time.
Approaches We Use
At South Island Counselling, we draw from a range of therapeutic approaches to support anxiety and stress, depending on your unique needs and preferences.

Some approaches focus on understanding and shifting thought patterns, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Others support emotional regulation and coping, including Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and mindfulness-based approaches.

We may also integrate approaches such as EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), somatic therapies, and other relational or solution-focused methods, depending on what feels most helpful for you.

What to Expect
Starting counselling can feel like a big step, but you don’t need to have everything figured out before you begin.
Your counsellor will take the time to understand your experience and work with you at a pace that feels comfortable. Together, you’ll begin to explore what’s been happening and build tools to support your well-being.
Sessions are available in-person in Victoria, BC, or online across British Columbia, offering flexibility and accessibility based on your needs.
