ART Therapy

Accelerated Resolution Therapy® (ART) is a brief, structured form of psychotherapy that helps reduce distress tied to difficult experiences or memories. Using guided eye movements and visualization techniques, ART helps your brain reprocess troubling images, sensations, and emotions so they no longer cause the same level of distress.

Nell Hodges MACP, RCC

Nell brings warmth, curiosity, and humility to her work with clients. She meets each person where they are and walks alongside as they touch and heal the pain they carry, come home to themselves, and rediscover what makes them feel alive. Nell works with people navigating life transitions, trauma, grief and loss, anxiety, and depression, with a special focus on midlife experiences, including menopause transition. Her integrative approach is person-centred and strengths-based. Nell is an Internal Family Systems (IFS) informed therapist and has completed training in Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), an innovative approach using eye movements and somatics to process traumatic experiences. Nell deeply respects the courage it takes to reach out for counselling and offers a gentle, welcoming space to land, reflect, and grow. She believes that healing can ask a lot of us, but it isn’t only about hard work. Connection, insight, lightness, and even laughter are powerful parts of the process. Nell holds a Master of Counselling degree. Before becoming a counsellor, she spent many years working in the BC public service. When she’s not counselling, Nell loves spending time with friends and family, being outdoors, and caring for her adorable (and delightfully complicated) pups.

About Accelerated Resolution Therapy

ART sessions follow a step-by-step process guided by a trained clinician. You do not need to describe your trauma in detail to benefit. The therapist will guide you through visualization and gentle eye movements to help your brain reprocess distressing images or sensations safely and effectively.

How ART Helps

Clinical studies have shown ART to be effective for trauma-related symptoms, anxiety, depression, grief, phobias, and more. It may be especially useful for those who have not experienced relief from other therapies, such as Cognitive Processing Therapy or Prolonged Exposure.

What Does ART Feel Like?

Many people describe ART sessions as calm, focused, and surprisingly gentle. You may experience physical sensations—like tingling, tightness, tears, or relaxation—as emotions shift and release. Clients often leave sessions feeling lighter, calmer, and more in control.

Key Benefits

• Brief and focused; many clients experience relief within one session.
• No detailed retelling of trauma is required; making it easier for both therapist and client.
• Clients remain in control throughout the session.
• Can address a wide range of emotional and physical symptoms.
• Evidence-based and trauma-informed.

How ART Differs From Other Therapies

One of ART’s most unique features is that you do not need to describe your trauma or personal experiences in detail if you prefer not to. You can still fully process and resolve those memories privately, while your clinician guides you through the technique.

Plus, there's no homework. ART uses targeted techniques that help you process and resolve trauma effectively, focusing on how memories are stored and experienced without reliving the pain.

ART shares some mechanisms with EMDR, particularly the use of bilateral eye movements and the aim of reducing distress associated with traumatic memories. However, ART differs in its structure and focus: sessions are more directive and include scripted interventions that actively guide the client to replace distressing images. ART is also typically briefer in format

Importantly, ART is not hypnosis. Clients remain fully alert, oriented, and aware throughout the process. Nor is ART a “band-aid” fix; while it can produce rapid relief, the method works through recognized neurological processes of memory reconsolidation supported by emerging research in affective neuroscience.

Understanding ART

Accelerated Resolution Therapy® (ART) is a brief, structured form of psychotherapy that helps people process distressing memories and symptoms by changing how those memories are stored in the brain. ART removes triggers by erasing negative images from view. ART uses guided eye movements and visualization techniques to reduce emotional and physical reactions to past experiences while allowing you to stay fully in control. Many clients report significant relief in just a few sessions.
