About Trauma-Informed Counselling in Victoria, BC
Understanding The Impact of Difficult Experiences
Difficult experiences can affect us in ways we don't always recognize. You may find yourself feeling more anxious, overwhelmed, or emotionally disconnected, or notice that past experiences continue to influence your relationships and everyday life.
At South Island Counselling, we offer a compassionate, supportive environment where you can explore these challenges at your own pace. Our counsellors recognize that past experiences can shape how we think, feel, and respond to the world around us.
Through a range of therapeutic approaches, we help clients develop greater self-understanding, strengthen coping skills, and work toward improved emotional well-being.
Trauma-informed counselling recognizes that difficult or overwhelming experiences can have a lasting impact on our emotional well-being, relationships, and responses to everyday situations.
Rather than focusing only on current symptoms, a trauma-informed approach considers how past experiences may influence the way we think, feel, and respond to stress.
This approach emphasizes creating a supportive environment built on trust, collaboration, respect, and personal choice. Your counsellor works with you to understand your concerns, identify your goals, and explore strategies that support your well-being.
You don't need to have experienced a major traumatic event or have a diagnosis of PTSD to benefit from a trauma-informed approach. Counselling can also help with the effects of difficult relationships, significant life changes, prolonged stress, or other emotionally challenging experiences.
Trauma-informed counselling does not necessarily involve revisiting painful memories in detail. Depending on your needs, sessions may focus on understanding emotional responses, developing coping strategies, strengthening relationships, or building a greater sense of stability and confidence.
How Can Trauma-Informed Counselling Help?
Difficult experiences can affect people in different ways. Sometimes the impact is immediate, while other times we may notice patterns in our emotions, relationships, or responses to stress long after an experience has passed.
Trauma-informed counselling can provide an opportunity to better understand these patterns and develop practical ways to support your emotional well-being.
Depending on your individual needs, counselling may help you:
• Understand emotional responses: Explore why certain situations may bring up strong feelings, anxiety, or discomfort.
• Develop coping strategies: Learn ways to manage stress, emotional overwhelm, and difficult feelings.
• Improve relationships: Recognize patterns that may affect trust, communication, and personal boundaries.
• Build self-awareness: Better understand how past experiences may influence present-day thoughts and behaviours.
• Strengthen self-esteem: Explore feelings of self-doubt, guilt, or shame and develop a more compassionate relationship with
yourself.
• Feel more grounded: Develop strategies that support emotional regulation and a greater sense of stability in everyday life.
Counselling is a collaborative process, and each person's experience is different. Your counsellor will work with you to identify goals and approaches that feel appropriate for your circumstances.
Our Approach to Trauma-Informed Counselling
At South Island Counselling, we recognize that everyone's experiences and needs are different. Our clinical counsellors draw from a variety of therapeutic approaches to provide individualized support, with an emphasis on compassion, collaboration, and emotional well-being.
Several of our counsellors have additional training in approaches that may be helpful when working with trauma-related concerns.
These include:
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
IFS explores the different parts of ourselves that may hold conflicting feelings, beliefs, or responses. This approach can help individuals develop greater self-understanding and compassion toward themselves.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT helps individuals develop greater awareness of their thoughts and emotions, build psychological flexibility, and take meaningful steps toward their personal values.
Somatic and Mindfulness-Based Approaches
These approaches help individuals become more aware of the connection between physical sensations, emotions, and stress responses. They may incorporate grounding techniques, mindfulness, and strategies for emotional regulation.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is a structured therapeutic approach used to help individuals process distressing memories and experiences. It is offered by counsellors with specific training in this modality.
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)
ART is a therapeutic approach that uses guided imagery and eye movements to help address distressing experiences and associated emotional responses.
Not all counsellors offer every approach. The suitability of a particular therapy depends on your individual circumstances, goals, and the training and experience of your counsellor.
Finding the Right Support
If you’re curious about CBT, you might start with a simple reflection:
What is one thought that has come up for me recently, and is there another way I could look at it?
Even small shifts in perspective can begin to influence how we feel and respond.
