Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) offers practical tools to better understand patterns in thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. By building awareness and exploring new ways of responding, it can help support meaningful and lasting change.

About Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

What is CBT?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a widely used, evidence-based counselling approach that helps people understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. It focuses on building awareness of patterns and developing practical strategies to support emotional well-being in everyday life.

CBT can be helpful for a range of concerns, including:

•    Anxiety and stress
•    Depression and low mood
•    Self-critical or negative thinking patterns
•    Overwhelm and burnout
•    Life transitions
•    Relationship challenges

Many people find CBT especially effective because it offers both insight and practical tools that can be applied outside of sessions. life.

What to Expect in a CBT Session

CBT is a collaborative and structured approach. Your counsellor will work with you to explore how your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours interact, and how certain patterns may be influencing your current experience.

Sessions may include:
•    Noticing patterns in thinking and emotional responses
•    Exploring how these patterns developed
•    Gently challenging unhelpful thoughts
•    Developing more balanced perspectives
•    Trying small, manageable changes in behaviour

This process is always adapted to your pace and comfort level. You can learn more about how counselling works at South Island Counselling here.

Understanding CBT

CBT is based on the idea that how we interpret situations influences how we feel and respond.

For example, two people may experience the same situation but have very different emotional reactions based on how they think about it. Over time, patterns of thinking can become automatic, sometimes contributing to stress, anxiety, or low mood.

CBT helps bring awareness to these patterns and offers ways to shift them in a more balanced and supportive direction. Rather than focusing only on the past, CBT often emphasizes present-day experiences and practical ways of moving forward.

A Thought to Begin With

If you’re curious about CBT, you might start with a simple reflection:

What is one thought that has come up for me recently, and is there another way I could look at it?

Even small shifts in perspective can begin to influence how we feel and respond.
